Baan Thai Cookery School

A lot of the past couple weeks has been spent in the office working on putting together all of the information we have collected over the summer.I went to the cooking school for our project but it was probably the most fun "tourist" thing I did for the project.

We started with a tour in the market. Our guide was very animated and even pointed out a pickled crab.

They gave us some Thai fruit to try before we started cooking. I had tried all of it before except for the green banana desert things. Each of us also had a cooking station for each of the dishes. There were many different rooms and they divided you up based on the dish you chose to cook. This is the cooking area in the room where we ate.

The first dish I made was cashew chicken which was really good, even though I picked out the elephant ear mushrooms.

Next dish, spring rolls. They were very good but it takes a lot of work to put them together. We did this dish mainly as a group, but then put two of our own together.

For soup I made chicken in coconut milk, or "tom kaa gai." It was probably my least favorite of the night, but I was already starting to get full.

For my last dish I made Chiang Mai Noodle with chicken or "kao soy" a traditional northern dish. We made the curry paste from scratch (as a group), friend the noodles for the topping, made the coconut milk from coconut shavings and hot water and then pounded all of the ingredients for the curry paste.

This was my group for the evening. They were really fun and all from North America except for one girl from England.
